WSSA was founded in 1959 and is located at the Alamogordo White Sands Regional Airport (ALM) approximately 3 miles southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Operations are scheduled most Saturdays and Sundays during daylight savings time and most Saturdays during the winter months.

The soaring in Southern New Mexico is excellent, with thermals to 17,000 feet msl plus during the summer and wave sometimes to 30,000 feet msl plus during the fall and winter.

Several New Mexico altitude records and 1,000 kilometer flights, including the first 1,000 kilometer Out and Return from New Mexico and the German National 500k Out and Return Open Class speed record were flown from here.

WSSA equipment includes a Cessna 182 towplane, L-13 Blanik, L-23 Blanik and a Grob Club Astir. WSSA has 2 active CFIG's and 8 Tow Pilots.
