ALAMOGORDO SOARING FIESTA May 23 - May 27 2008 The White Sands Soaring Association is pleased to host 4 days of New Mexico flying at its best. If you've not experienced the soaring magic and hospitality of the high desert and mountains of New Mexico, you're missing a great experience! Several records and 1000k flights were flown here and if you're not interested in soaring records, try setting a record for personal fun. Opportunities abound for both the fun flier and the hotdog to stretch their wings in a relaxed setting.The local area includes some of the most interesting places in the Southwest, from high desert to towering pines, with the cool mountain retreats of Cloudcroft and Ruidoso only a short drive away. Lodging and dining are available close by in Alamogordo and Cloudcroft and day trips to Ruidoso are easy. Operations are scheduled most Saturdays and Sundays during daylight savings time and most Saturdays during the winter months.
The soaring in Southern New Mexico is excellent, with thermals to 17,000 feet msl plus during the summer and wave sometimes to 30,000 feet msl plus during the fall and winter.
Several New Mexico altitude records and 1,000 kilometer flights, including the first 1,000 kilometer Out and Return from New Mexico and the German National 500k Out and Return Open Class speed record were flown from here.
WSSA equipment includes a Cessna 182 towplane, L-13 Blanik, Grob 103A Twin II Acro and a Grob Club Astir. WSSA has 2 ½ active CFIG's and 10 Tow Pilots.
